BIOGRAPHY

MiekMiek van Rooijen is one of those rare saxophone players, who uses her technique only as a tool to express all of her emotions.

As a young girl she longed for musical freedom to improvise and, maybe more important to perform.

A little later in life than most she discovered the saxophone (tenor, alto and baritone) and a new horizon opened up for this ‘saxy’ lady. It combined her vocal ambitions, provided lots of room for improvisation and added something special to her charming appearance.

MiekMiek is not tall, but will draw eyes in every room she enters. Her sparkling personality and individualistic dress-sense give her everything she needs to be completely home on a stage, any stage.

She will wield her saxophone as easily in a Jazz- or Caribbean band, or will slip into a comfortable horn section for any given funk group.

Versatility is her game and when it comes to her favourite jazz ballads she is not averse to combining the best of all she experienced, as long as she can groove.

These qualities make that among the many talented musicians Holland has to offer, she truly stand out.

She is vastly becoming an export success, as is proven by tours to Switzerland, Spain,

The Caribbean, international jazz festivals in Russia, Germany and Sweden.

She played in many groups like The ladies of swing, Coupe Cubana, Ayakata, Some like it hot, Latin Connection. Had for many years her own band Jungle Jive, in which she combined jazzy music and the possibility to improvise with dance ability and show.

Since 2008 she developed a one-woman-show, also using her vocal talent.

Accompanying herself with keyboard and saxophones; she sounds like a complete band.

Also on her own she plays all different styles: jazz, latin, blues, funk, lounge music. She sings English, Spanish, Italian, Greek and Dutch songs. Diversity is her power.

She performed this show already successfully in Holland, France, Spain,  St. Maarten, Curacao  and Puerto Rico.

In 2010 she formed again a new Latin band: Sabor Con Saxo and went on with her allround group Sweet & Saxy.

She also have some very nice and funny theatrical acts: The Blue Sisters, The Brunettes and The Rockin’ Angels.

Check it out! It is good advice to keep an eye or ear out for this groovy, saxy lady, for she is certainly going places!!!
